Kitchen Update
When there are small children in the house, you keep them close -- and when there are four kids under the age of four, you keep them very close. This usually means that they, and the stuff that comes with them, takes over all of the communal (formerly adult) living spaces. My clients were no different: the play kitchen and the kids had taken over their space. Their main need was a space that was still useful for the kids, but styled for adults.
Fresh Living Room in Atlanta
Happy New Year! What resolutions did you make for your space this year? Have you said to yourself, "You know, I'll get a new sofa and the room will be done." New sofas are great. New beds are great. New furniture is fun and when you're starting with an empty room.
Urban Cabin
Decatur is known for its distinct, historic neighborhoods, eclectic food, and vibrant downtown: it is not known for log cabins. My clients are the owners of this unlikely urban retreat, and wanted to design a space that provided a TV-free zone to read, relax, eat, and play games as a family.
Bedroom Colorblocking
We started with a dark blue nursery. The twins that share the room are nearly two years old and it was time for the nursery to convert to a big(ger) boy room.
An Office for Two
A doctor and a writer. Odd hours. They needed a workspace that was functional, clean, and attractive given that it's seen as soon as you walk in the front door. They came to this design party with funky art, cool tchotchkes, and great taste.
Classic Dining in Avondale
The first time I met my client was on the soccer field, and our conversation included the exclamation: “come and paint my dining room!” As the kids say: the rest is history. My client is a Classics teacher and has an obvious affinity for classical literature and languages, Rome (well, let’s say all things Italy), and has a house filled with heirlooms. Basically, she’s a dream client. Inspiration at every turn.
Trend Alert
My team and I prevailed upon High Point Market, in High Point, North Carolina this week. High Point Market happens twice a year and is the largest home furnishings industry trade show in the world, with 2000 vendors in 180 buildings. We had a blast visiting showrooms, attending parties, meeting with our designer friends and finding out what the hot trends will be on the floors of our favorite showrooms in the coming year! Just like in fashion, the 70's are back!
New Baby. New Bedroom.
While these moms were at the hospital welcoming their second baby girl into the world, we were at their house giving them a brand new master suite to come home to! It was a day of the best kind of gifts, all around. Can you imagine coming home from the hospital to a brand new bedroom?!
Out-of-This-World Surprise
This little girl was turning 9 and her family wanted to surprise her with a brand new room. As I began the design process with her family, I learned that she loves the color purple and outer space: but I’m not one for theme rooms. Maybe for kids, but even then, theme rooms get old quickly.
Be our Guest (...and help with new Baby!)
I have worked with this amazing couple a couple of times on the living and dining spaces on the main level of their gorgeous house (check those out here and here) so when they told me they were having a baby, I was all in! They needed bedrooms for grandparents and friends to come and stay (read: HELP!).
Gallery Wall HOW TO!
Any large, empty wall space is calling out for a stylish and quirky gallery wall. Whether it's the empty space over your couch, or your bed, or over a desk: a gallery wall can serve as an expression of images that inspire you or surround you with pictures of the ones you love.
Southern (California-Inspired) Veranda
We were definitely channelling California for the inspiration of this space. I grew up in California and it always has a huge effect in the way I see design - the function and style of a space. California style to me is all about lounging. It is relaxed, timeless, and has organic lines and lots of plants.
Big Boys' Bedroom
Last week, we revealed the playroom for the FOUR boys UNDER FOUR. Today, we reveal the "Big Boy" bedroom update for the oldest two brothers. When we started, the walls were bare, both mattresses were on the floor, and there was storage for clothing. Pretty much your basic kids room.
A Playroom for FOUR under FOUR
When you've got four boys under four, it's pretty important that you've got a playroom space that is well organized and designed to contain all that four little boys can do to a room.
BeltLine Reboot
Two technology companies share office space in this refurbished industrial office off the Atlanta BeltLine: a sustainable redevelopment project that, when completed, will connect 45 intern neighborhoods via a 22-mile loop of trails and parks. The entire BeltLine is based on railroad corridors that formerly encircled the city of Atlanta.
Looks Like Teen Spirit
These awesome Decatur teen girls share a room and were desperate for better use of their space. Their mom got them these double loft beds but did not know where to go from there. They were so massive in the space and seemed to take over.
Little Changes, Big Difference
Raise your hand if you have a sparsely decorated guest room in your home. I see you, there. And there. Yup, I see you too. Okay, put your hands down. We've all been there. You want your guest room to be a refreshing and comfortable space for your guests: a place where they feel special and welcome in your home.
A Place Where Dreams Are Made
I love it when clients want MORE. After transforming the entry, living room, dining room, and patio area earlier in the year, my clients hired me to update their master bedroom and guest rooms. Today, we'll explore the master bedroom.
Fresh in the Highlands
My clients have a gorgeous tudor home in the Virginia Highlands suburb of Atlanta. It needed to be fresh and rescue dog friendly!
Every playroom needs a Climbing Wall
My clients wanted the playroom in the basement to be the neighborhood hangout - high voltage and lots of fun. Fun and Done! Every basement, neighborhood hangout needs a rock wall. Right?
