Hodgepodge Basement Turns Hostess with the Mostest
My client had a basement that was filled with a hodgepodge of furniture from her previous house. It was comfortable and lovely but she wanted it to have a lot more life and be a space that was much more conducive for her family of six and their friends to have movie night and play games.
Ready for it? Here's the big reveal:
It started with the sofa. It had to be a big, fabulous sectional. Check! We love this one and even though the upholstery is light, it will withstand stains and jumping without a problem (if you haven’t looked at upholstery recently, know that technology has jumped leaps and bounds beyond what it was just a year or two ago - we poured red wine on this just to check!).
Our color palette was army green, blue and yellow with a touch of coral. With that, we had a blast with fabrics - that dot on the ottoman made us swoon from the start, so we reupholstered her ottoman in that and added a big tray for drinks and a plant and whatnot (#protip: always leave room for the whatnots).
The media center needed to be big and amazing. The TV on the floor wasn’t going to do. We designed this with industrial elements - iron and wood and had it made for us by a wonderful craftsman in Texas.
I was strolling my favorite local antique store when I came upon this turn of the century antique carousel sign/light and I immediately texted a picture to my client. She agreed it was perfect.
The carpet was replaced with this beautiful neutral wool check, just a bit of pattern that adds interest, will hide stains and looks great under that colorful vintage rug!
THAT CHAIR. Did you notice THAT CHAIR?! Let's take a closer look. I’ve wanted to make this chair for awhile and I knew this was the client would be all about it. We found a gorgeous yellow velvet and put the stripe down the center in blue belgian linen. It adds so much fun and light to this corner!
Ship lap! We had the walls of the basement and the stairwell to the main level shiplapped and painted white for so much amazing texture. I’m in LOVE with it (hi, Chip and JoJo).
We redid the mantle and fireplace and had custom art made - three swiss crosses in our gorgeous colors laid over maps of places important to the family.
