Pop Project: Where the Cool Kids Are

This client project was particularly fun because we took a home that was essentially blank and gray—with a little brown thrown in—and injected tons of color, life, and fun into it. I’ll reveal more rooms in the coming weeks, but the first space I want to share is their hangout area.

As you can see from the before picture, it was empty. Nada. Zilch. But it got great light and was just begging to be used.

So I had a giant chartreuse banquette custom-made (because of course I did) and covered the back and the seat with Crypton fabric, which is impervious to stains and, therefore, oh-so family friendly. Underneath the seat, I had deep, wide drawers built in to store games and other items they hanging out with friends and family.

The large, oblong tulip table offers plenty of space for all kinds of games and snacks, and the orange plastic chairs provide a graphic, fun, Midcentury vibe that is perfect for spending time with the crew. They’re also kind of glam, which I absolutely love.

We papered the wall behind the banquette with a gorgeous, colorful print and added gold sconces to allow intense Uno tournaments to continue well into the night.

The large-scale art that fills the adjacent wall was inspired by a piece I had originally selected but was actually painted by my very talented client. I love that it both brought vibrant color and a beautifully personal touch to the space.
