Playful Sophistication for a Young Family
This family lives in the lovely town of Marietta, Georgia, and wanted a couple of bedroom updates — and a fun bonus room design that you’ll just have to keep reading to see.
The primary bedroom suite was a total blank slate. Just big white boxes with no personality. So we started with beautiful, textural grasscloth behind the stunning wooden bed that features an upholstered headboard. We added a custom upholstered bench at the foot and loaded up the bed with luxurious linens in soft pinks and blues — restful was the goal.
Clean lines and generous drawers define the gorgeous ivory shagreen nightstands and provide plenty of storage that allows the tops to remain uncluttered. Graphic art adds a colorful contrast behind the tall blush-colored lamps.
We had our handyman build custom shelves and mount them on the adjacent wall so they could hold alarm clocks, sound machines, and books.
Just off this bedroom is an oddly shaped, yet wonderfully sunbathed sitting room. We picked up on the color of the bedroom and did a large-scale-pattern damask wallpaper. We brought in pink with the tufted sofa, then added natural elements like a curved wood desk and a rattan ottoman. Large-scale art contributes interest and funk to the space, while the lacquer, ceramic, and brass lamp, the brass side table, and the linen curtains with brass hardware add sophistication.
Our clients had the crib, glider, and lamp from their older daughter’s nursery, but wanted to create something fresh for their new baby. So we covered the walls in pink-and-white patterned wallpaper, added a soft tiled rug, new bedding, art, and window treatments for a girly, sweet, yet graphic and fun vibe.
This big-girl’s room is possibly the cutest we’ve ever done. Like the primary bedroom, it was a big blank canvas at first — wall-to-wall beige and a ceiling fan that had seen better days. The little lady of the house wanted a rainbow room, so we designed a bright and fun space that leans more toward elevated than obnoxious and can grow with her as her tastes change.
We color-blocked paint on the walls and ceiling and created an effect that feels like you’re looking up at a bright, crisp sky.
She also got a traditional settee in a punchy coral with a box-pleat skirt that we’re quite honestly obsessed with. We had custom window treatments made to match the pillow on the settee and brought in a black-and-white dalmatian rug to balance out the kaleidoscope of other colors.
We had a blast with the art pieces, including the rainbow hue dots above the settee, the cockatoo and rainbow art above her bed, and that profile, which is her’s! The result is playful, funky, and fun.
The nightstand is particularly cool because it has a light in the base and a charging station. Her grandpa made the bed, so we simply reinforced and painted it. He also made the green table and the chair, which both got a fresh coat of paint. An acrylic shelf holds her art supplies, and her aunt made the horse painting that hangs above her desk. We could not love the whole family’s contribution more!
Finally, we rounded out the house with their music room, which is the first space you see when you walk in the front door and is filled with guitars, a bongo drum, and a piano. It sets the tone for the rest of the house with a bright lamp, art, and pillows, exuding a simple, calm, yet fun atmosphere. Here, music is played and everyone is free to relax and hang out. Dancing is optional but highly encouraged.
