Look up here!

Yesterday I visited the Inspiration House at the annual Atlanta Cathedral Antiques Show. Proceeds went to a wonderful organization and a population dear to my heart, Refugee Family Services.

The rooms were lovely but I couldn’t help being most awed by the ceilings. There were beautiful rough wood paneled ones, installed beams, and some great paint techniques: neutral walls were outlined with rich slate blue moulding with the color extending across the ceiling and this one below showcasing clean white walls punctuated with a bright pop of hot pink! So unexpected and fun.

Decorating ceilings is not a new design concept (ahem, Sistine Chapel). What was great about these designers, however, was that they made it fun and accessible for those of us who do not live in manor or who are not destined to marry a prince (I already have, points for me). And with that, all of a sudden we have an unexpected focal point…up! I’m looking at my ceilings now and wondering how a pink sky would look. Maybe some cherubs on cell phones telling jokes?  Hmm, the possibilities are endless.

Mission Style Bedroom Plan, eDesign

I’m working on a design for a bedroom that is 1100 miles away. This online ‘eDesign’ option is great for people who live far away and want to take their time implementing my plan. In this case, the total plan is 12 pages and includes room layouts, sketches, and a link for every piece pictured (and much more not pictured here).

The sprawling mission style home is surrounded by woods and the homeowners desired a plan that brought the outdoors in, was warm and inviting but with great style. They had a mission style sleigh bed and 2 mission dressers to work with when we started. I’m very happy with how it is coming together!

Dining Drab turns Dynamic: Before & After!

I am working on this dining room right now and it is turning out beautifully! The ‘before’ picture is drab and completely dated. We painted a cool grey and dark blue, added a beautiful wood cornice board with raw silk steel grey drapery. We kept the old table but changed the chairs out. We upholstered inexpensive chairs and a bench (not shown) with a gorgeous grey and tan ikat fabric and tufted end chairs. And what a difference a beautiful chandelier makes! The brass sconces sitting on the table  in the ‘after’ photo I found on Ebay and put on the wall on either side of the mirror. I’ll show you that wall…later.

And after… Gorgeous!

Room with a View

Funky flowers and citrus are an easy way to bring freshness and color to a space. This is the view from my kitchen to my living room. With floor plans being more and more open, it can be a challenge to keep the space between eating area and living area cohesive, neat and inviting. Also, a cute 5 year old watching TV in her skivvies adds a certain quirkiness to any room. Do get yourself one.
